About me

My name is Johanna Stirling, or Jo for short. I designed and created this website for teachers and learners of English as a foreign language. More about the website here.

I live in Norwich, a small city in the East of England. In fact, I was born here, though I have lived in Pittsburgh, Paris and Newcastle upon Tyne in the north of England too.

I work as a freelance English language consultant. I'm an English teacher, teacher trainer, materials writer and presenter. I started working in this field in 1986. Before that I had lots of jobs that ranged from marketing a theatre company to selling sandwiches from the back of a tricycle!

Most of my teaching and teacher training nowadays is for NILE (Norwich Institute for Language Education) where I'm a NILE Associate Trainer. And my other main employer is Cambridge University Press, for whom I write and give presentations. I'm a Product Champion for some of their coursebooks: face2face, Messages, and English in Mind.

I am also busy writing some other materials. Watch this space!

More on my cv here.

And in my free time (what little there is!) I like reading, going to the cinema and theatre, gardening and dancing. Oh, and I like eating too! For some books, films and English food you might like, go to my Recommendations page .
